Automation retrofit of manual gate valves

At the customer site, a DN1200 manual gate valve requires two operators to spend one hour daily on opening and closing operations. This is time-consuming and the site environment is poor, posing health risks to the operators. Therefore, there is a requirement to convert the existing manual gate valve to electric operation.

Detailed description

At the client's site, a manual gate valve DN1200 requires two operators to spend one hour daily opening and closing it. This is time-consuming and the site environment is poor, posing health risks to the operators. Therefore, a request was made to convert the manual gate valve to electric operation.

During a site survey by our technicians, a leak of irritating gas was detected, confirming the poor working environment.

Challenges Faced:

1. Unknown valve torque

2. Uncertain connection method between the worm gear and the valve

Solution:

Based on previous quotations for gate valves of this size, we estimated the torque of this gate valve, increasing the safety factor to 1.5 to ensure our actuator can provide sufficient torque to open and close the valve.

After communication with the client's on-site supervisor to confirm some connection dimensions, we visited the site, removed the manual gearbox, and measured the connection dimensions at the bottom of the gearbox to ensure our actuator can correctly connect to the client's valve.

Results:

Following on-site installation and commissioning, the system operates normally, and the client is very satisfied. Further inquiries for similar manual-to-automatic conversions are expected.
